What Is ADAS Calibration and Why Does My Car Need It?
ADAS calibration is the process of realigning the safety cameras mounted to your windshield to the manufacturer's exact specifications. You need it after a windshield replacement because even a millimeter of camera misalignment can cause safety features like automatic braking to fail or trigger incorrectly.
What Does ADAS Stand For?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These are the modern safety features built into your vehicle, including:
- Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist
- Forward Collision Alert
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Rain-Sensing Wipers
Most of these systems rely on a forward-facing camera that is mounted directly to the inside of your windshield, usually right behind the rearview mirror.
Why Calibration is Mandatory After Windshield Replacement
When a technician replaces your windshield, they must disconnect and physically remove the ADAS camera, then remount it onto the new glass. Even the most careful technician cannot place it back with microscopic perfection by hand. Furthermore, the new glass may have microscopic differences in curvature or thickness compared to the old one, which refracts light differently into the camera lens.
If the camera is off by just one degree, the system's field of vision can be off by several feet at highway speeds. This means your car might think you are drifting out of your lane when you aren't, or worse, it might fail to detect a stopped car ahead of you on I-20.
Static vs. Dynamic Calibration
Depending on your vehicle's make and model, it will require one of two calibration methods (or sometimes both):
- Static Calibration: Performed in-shop under controlled lighting. We use precise lasers and manufacturer-specific target boards placed at exact distances from the car to recalibrate the lens.
- Dynamic Calibration: Performed by plugging a diagnostic computer into the vehicle and driving it on clearly marked roads at specific speeds until the system recalibrates itself.
Don't Risk Your Safety
Skipping ADAS calibration is a massive safety and liability risk. At Auto Glass Arlington Texas, our technicians are certified in ADAS recalibration. We perform the calibration immediately after replacing your windshield, ensuring you drive away fully protected.
